{"id":5135,"date":"2026-05-04T14:59:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T14:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/?p=5135"},"modified":"2026-05-04T14:59:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T14:59:38","slug":"england-student-center-lounge-dedicated-at-siu-honoring-student-vision-and-donor-generosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/?p=5135","title":{"rendered":"England Student Center Lounge dedicated at SIU, honoring student vision and donor generosity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5137\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_5165-copy-web.jpg\" alt=\"Bob and Pat England cut the ribbon for the England Student Center Lounge.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_5165-copy-web.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_5165-copy-web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_5165-copy-web-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_5165-copy-web-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More than 100\u00a0students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and staff packed the fourth floor of the Southern Illinois University Student Center to celebrate the dedication of the England Student Center Lounge, a student-driven project made possible by a $250,000 gift from alumni Bob and Pat England.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The renovated space, formerly home to the WIDB radio station, now serves as a modern, multipurpose lounge designed to meet student needs, particularly for commuters seeking a place to gather, collaborate and recharge between classes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis is much more than just opening a room,\u201d said Lydia Phelps, president of the Undergraduate Student Government. \u201cIt is the realization of an idea that started with students simply asking for a place to belong.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project originated with Undergraduate Student Government leaders, who envisioned a \u201cthird space\u201d on campus, neither a classroom nor a residence hall, where students could build community. Through surveys, forums and ongoing input, the concept evolved into a lounge featuring collaboration areas, a podcast and music recording space, conference rooms, workout equipment, a kitchenette and areas for rest and reflection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Phelps credited former USG President Penny\u00a0Bordewick\u00a0with launching the initiative.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPenny saw potential in an empty fourth-floor space and imagined something far greater,\u201d Phelps said. \u201cHer leadership laid the foundation for everything we are celebrating today.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bordewick\u00a0said the idea began during a walkthrough of the underutilized space in 2024.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was kind of a mess,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the vision for what it could become was so clear. We knew this could be a place built by students, for students.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project gained momentum through continued advocacy by student leaders and collaboration with Student Affairs, the Student\u00a0Center\u00a0and the SIU Foundation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brian Flath, director of development for\u00a0student\u00a0affairs with the SIU Foundation, said the project aligned closely with student needs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u00a0love a great vision, and\u00a0we\u00a0love serving students\u2019 needs,\u201d Flath said. \u201cTo take a dream that students had and see it come to fruition is really magic.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Flath said the\u00a0Englands\u00a0committed to the project shortly after learning about the proposal, allowing the renovation to move forward.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr.\u00a0Jeffery\u00a0Burgin emphasized the importance of student leadership.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen the students said they wanted it, you have to give them what they need,\u201d Burgin said. \u201cThis space is a testament to what happens when student voices are heard and supported.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also noted the collaborative nature of the project, including contributions from interior design students who helped shape the space.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bob and Pat England said their gift was inspired by their own experiences at SIU and their belief in supporting future students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSIU has changed our lives, and for that we are deeply grateful,\u201d Bob England said. \u201cThis gift is a way for us to say thank you.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pat England said they hope the lounge becomes a hub for creativity and connection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cStudents are our future,\u201d she said. \u201cWe hope this will be a place where ideas come together and grow into something meaningful.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0Englands\u00a0encouraged students to take full advantage of their time at SIU.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBe curious, work hard, support each other and take risks,\u201d Bob England said. \u201cSomeday you will look back and recognize how these years have shaped you.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cToday, we\u2019re not just cutting a ribbon,\u201d Phelps said. \u201cWe\u2019re opening a space that reflects the heart of SIU: collaboration, opportunity, creativity and community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the\u00a0Englands, the gift honors the university that shaped their lives and the connections they formed on campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe\u2019re incredibly grateful for what Bob received through his education at SIU,\u201d Pat England said. \u201cAnd what I got from SIU was Bob.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their gift also supports the Imagine SIU 2030 fundraising campaign, which has approximately 2 1\/2 years\u00a0remaining.
