Teachers inspire future teachers, and such is the case for Tayler Threet.<\/p>\n

A graduate of Pope County High School, Threet is studying secondary English education in SIU\u2019s School of Education.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had amazing teachers in high school that were there for me as more than just as teacher,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew I wanted to be that kind of teacher for other students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Threet was accepted to many colleges around the country, but she wanted to stay close to home, so she chose SIU. She has received scholarship support, including the Bettye and Gene Lauderdale Scholarship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am paying for college all on my own,\u201d she said. \u201cAny help I received has really helped. I\u2019m so grateful for people that donate.\u201d<\/p>\n

While studying at SIU, Threet\u2019s mother passed away. The support she has received from her professors \u2013 particularly Dr. Joe Shapiro and Dr. Anne Chandler \u2013 has strengthened her resolve to become a caring educator.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose two professors were really there for me,\u201d said Threet, a Vienna native. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I could have gotten through that without them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both the financial and moral support she has received at SIU has driven her closer to her goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful for people like that,\u201d she said. \u201cIf I had the means, I would want to help others.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
