{"id":1038,"date":"2018-03-20T15:41:08","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T15:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2018-03-20T15:41:08","modified_gmt":"2018-03-20T15:41:08","slug":"siu-raises-over-475000-on-day-of-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.siuf.org\/?p=1038","title":{"rendered":"SIU raises over $475,000 on Day of Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V8fJzTZ9ZkU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">by Rebecca Renshaw<\/p>\n<p>CARBONDALE, Ill. \u2013 The second annual Day of Giving for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/siu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Illinois University Carbondale<\/a>\u00a0raised more than $475,000 from more than 1,800 donors, and the donations are still rolling in.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kwGttNkE080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGive the Gift of Experience\u201d<\/a>\u00a0as its call to action, the 24-hour fundraising campaign rallied SIU supporters across the country and the globe in support of SIU students and programs.<\/p>\n<p>The SIU Day of Giving website at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siuday.siu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">siuday.siu.edu<\/a>\u00a0shows where funds were donated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many small donations made a big difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno thanked the many alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff who supported the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 24-hour campaign model provides a mechanism for people to connect with their giving,\u201d Montemagno said. \u201cIt provides a framework so that everybody says, \u2018My $50 gift or $20 gift is going to make a difference, because we\u2019re all giving together as a community.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese donations not only help the university with key projects, but also reveal the deep affection that many have for SIU Carbondale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking forward to SIU\u2019s 150<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jim Salmo, vice chancellor for development and alumni relations and CEO of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/siuf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SIU Foundation<\/a>, said the funds will make an immediate impact on the areas designated by donors. Another goal is to attract first-time donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event once again exceeded our expectations,\u201d Salmo said, noting that the first Day of Giving raised $341,121. \u201cWe are already looking forward to next year as the kick-off to SIU Carbondale\u2019s 150 anniversary celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student involvement drove donations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Salmo said students played a pivotal role in the event\u2019s success. Many students connected with the campaign through information booths at Morris Library, the Student Center and many colleges and units.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trophies headed to CASA and Education and Human Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traveling trophies will be presented to the college or unit with the highest number of participants and for the college or unit that raised the most dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a tremendous amount of participation this year over last year and I think it came from a friendly competition among the colleges,\u201d Salmo said. \u201cI\u2019m very pleased to announce that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/asa.siu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SIU\u2019s College of Applied Sciences and Arts<\/a>\u00a0will be awarded the trophy for receiving the highest number of gifts at 306.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ehs.siu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SIU\u2019s College of Education and Human Services<\/a>\u00a0raised the most dollars at $96,996.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event would not have been successful without several online ambassadors and on-campus volunteers, including students and alumni who shared fundraising progress and messaging on various social platforms, Salmo said.
